Silverstone F1 Podium Trophies

I can proudly announce, that I have created this year’s podium trophies for the F1 Pirelli British Grand Prix. Commissioned by Pirelli for the most prestigious project that a motorsport artist could dream of… no pressure then! I knew that I needed to create a trophy that held and felt like a trophy. It needed to reflect both the Union Flag and Silverstone, the history of the circuit where my late father first brought me in 1986, and its evolution from former airfield to modern race track. And it needed to be precision engineered, using F1 level tech.

So here we are, the Silverstone Wing! It’s form created directly from the digital model of an F1 front wing, the British flag brought to life through precision machined aircraft grade aluminium (silver… of course) with red and blue accents of the British flag represented in the material that dominates Formula 1 engineering today, carbon fibre. The trophy bases are one piece, that’s all machined not with an added plaque, and colourised with 42 microns of Cerakote instead of paint. Interference fit with the trophy body, no bolts needed. Light weight wasn’t really a focus, but these 2nd and 3rd place trophies weight just 1.5kg at 40cm tall.

Massive thanks to Pirelli Motorsport for the belief and trust, in for me, my career landmark project. And to my creative partners, Pangolin Editions as ever, and new friends at Alitech and Carbon Component solutions, for inordinate hours of dedication.
And possibly my favourite photo of anything I have ever created... Fred's face!
